Spiegel Restoration specializes in the restoration and repair of wood and steel windows. From rehanging roped windows and touching up failing glazing, to complete window restorations and the installation of custom storm windows, we provide all services necessary to keep your windows functional and true to their historic craftsmanship.

Who we are

After spending a decade and a half as a high school English and history teacher, I decided to shift course and pursue a passion for historic preservation. After spending time apprenticing under a master window restorer, I started Spiegel Restoration in the Detroit, Michigan area.

By blending the use of new technologies with traditional craftsmanship, I work with clients to balance the need for increased energy efficiency with the requirements of historic designation. While always delivering an aesthetically pleasing product.

In 2022, our family moved to northern Colorado where I'm hoping to provide the same excellent service.

What is window restoration?

For wood windows, the process typically involves the basics of removing sashes, stripping the sashes and jambs, removing glass, sanding, repairing, glazing the glass back in, painting, and installation.

Steel windows are similar, but when possible, the windows are restored in place. While steel does not need to be sanded, all parts should be resurfaced using a wire wheel.

Before committing to a restoration project, I ask that customers familiarize themselves with the National Parks Service briefs on window restoration. Reading these helps customers to understand the complete scope of the process, and also become educated consumers when discussing future restoration projects.

Where do we work

While we are based in northern Colorado, we are open to projects throughout Colorado and neighboring states. Fort Collins, Longmont, Boulder, and Denver make up most of our projects, but we have traveled as far as Indianapolis, Detroit, and Dallas/Fort Worth for projects.
